I’m using the default recovery options within Microsoft. Why do I need Cloud-to-Cloud Backup?

Microsoft recommends you use a 3 party backup. Microsoft uses a shared responsibility model for Microsoft 365 where they are responsible for the availability of the service. The customer is responsible for backing up their own data as Microsoft is not liable for lost data.

I have an archive product. Why can’t I use that to recover from ransomware?

Archive is not backup. Both are important, but archive is meant for e-discovery, not for recovering after a cyberthreat or ransomware incident. You can’t restore the mailbox or calendar to a point-in-time with archive. You also can’t restore SharePoint or OneDrive properly. Backup allows you to recover so you can actually use the data or email.
