OVERVIEW Quality weather data is critical in these times of climate change, but there is generally decline in service levels from government departments in South Africa who are tradionally the suppliers of these services. The crowd sourcing of weather data from reliable high quality private weather stations is now a reality. The sight of a thunder storm or rain squall in the distance brings home the fact that weather happens at a very local level and a good footprint of actual weather stations adds tremendously to our knowledge of localised risk. Weatherly is a service that will provide up to date weather information against climate data. The weather is sourced from over 600 Openweather points and nearly 600 Davis Instruments weather stations across the country. In addition, there has never been the collation of this many physical weather stations into one framework, and the ability to bring weather to such a local level. The weather sources are www.VitalWeather.co.za and www.weatherlink.com The footprint of physical stations is unique as it is a combination of urban stations, gricultural and industrial sites providing comprehensive coverage. Our ambition is to grow the footprint of Davis Instrument weather stations through raising the interest and awareness of their service. WEATHER VS CLIMATE The weather stations have been mapped against climate data at a localised level which provides a unique view of the comparison of weather conditions over time against a base line of climate data. There are more than 170 'climate places 'across the country and the weather stations have been grouped to these climate places. WEATHER AND RISK The weather stations are also mapped against the STATSSA spatial framework which allows us to project the weather station data to the spatial framework at a localised level for South Africa. We have linked the property ownership and bond exposure to this frameowrk which allows customers to identify high value areas. We can directly link customer data to the spatial framework through geocoding. DATA We are focused on recording data that can cause physical damage such as wind, rain and heat. Unfortunately we cannot provide hail information. We also have other data such as barometric pressure, that are received but not kept in the database. These elements are also the climate data elements that we can compare to so is more meaningful TIMING AND MAINTENANCE The data is received hourly on the hour, via API, and merged into the database within 15 minutes. Alerts of extreme weather can therefore reported shortly after occurring and at least within a maximum of 75 minutes. These times can be shortened as required by customers but would carry a higher cost DELIVERY PLATFORM Data is maintained within the Microsoft Azure platform and delivery is via Power BI template app and/or an API. There are three levels of service: Weather data, and climate comparison supply - this is a data delivery service and the customer would integrate it into their internal platforms Business customer data matched to national spatial framework - we would incorporate the customer data into our platform and provide the merged data back to the customer Complete service of monitoring the weather risk against the customer data - we would assume the role of managing the risk profile of the business customer base, monitoring CUSTOMERS Potential business customers for this service are any businesses who have spatial risk exposure which may be affected by climate change. This includes mortgage banks, insurance companies, mining, property, government, and agricultural industry.
