Please note: GDPR Discovery Toolkit is NOT a tool to certify compliance. It is the distributed responsibility of the customer and their legal and compliance teams to certify their own GDPR compliance.

Our objective: Identify and create an inventory of personal data relevant to the GDPR. Guide customers to solutions for GDPR compliance.

The project is successful when you have answers to questions like:

• How much data do I have?
• Where is my data?
• Which data is impacted by the GDPR (e.g., contains PII - Personal Identifiable Information)?

IT Partner responsibilities:

• Identify personal data and its locations
• Report on data use and access
• Recommend security controls to prevent, detect, and respond to vulnerabilities and data breaches
• Advise on documentation and data management

Client responsibilities:

• Provide access to various data locations, databases, local storage, removable devices, backup media, and 3rd-party applications
• Plan resources and activities
• Establish timelines
• Readiness to implement Microsoft Information Protection

Plan:

1. Kick-off meeting
2. Step 1 -- Identify and assess data sources across the organization
3. Step 2 -- Plan for automated classification and labeling
4. Step 3 -- Select the right solution (Microsoft Information Protection or Microsoft Advanced Data Governance)
5. Step 4 (on-premises) -- Implement Microsoft Information Protection
6. Step 5 (on-premises) -- Scan existing data sources
7. Step 4 (online) -- Prepare for Search and Discovery
8. Step 5 (online) -- Search and Discovery in Microsoft 365

Results:

• Data source inventory to identify and document data sources within the organization
• Classification and labeling of data
• Definition of a data classification taxonomy and label schema based on legal and business requirements
• Reporting on data discovery
